Coco – The designer
After five years studying fine arts in Paris, Coco forged a successful career as a communication consultant for leading French fashion designers and couture houses. She now also creates imagery for major retail brands and publications spanning both the independent and mainstream press, including Vogue, ELLE, Nylon and Muse. Her approach mixes several techniques, combining old-school processes such as painting and hand-drawing with digital techniques. For the finished product, she balances a mix of visual restraint and minimalism with a more leftfield and pop-friendly approach. Her work has been published in numerous publications including Taschen, Gestalten,Victionary and several exhibitions in London, Los Angeles and Barcelona. She has also worked on a series of collaborations, including Addition Adelaide in Japan, Evian, Longchamp, K Karl Lagerfeld.

Sources for inspiration
Forget Me Not is a concept that revolves around Coco’s own peculiar visual universe and most notably the encounter between several of her particular fields of interest. These include the collage works of the modernist avant-garde, Surrealism, montage as a way of enchanting reality, geometric patterns – especially in esoteric imagery, animals seen as totems, the talismanic power of the object and literary references ranging from childrens’ tales to fin-de-siècle novels.

AW – 11/12
The inspiration for the new winter collection, Dreams & Feathers, is found in Coco’s trademark orchestration of ancient esoteric symbols with a hyper-contemporary approach to design. This year, the collection takes a foray into more graphic territories – cubism, kaleidoscopic refractions and the works of M.C. Escher all spring to mind – as well as adopting a new, ulltra-versatile lozenge silhouette.
Feathered messengers of ancient wisdom invite us to a flight into the unknown, a world of psychedelia, dream- like geometries and strange organic landscapes where feathers grow like clusters of plants and ancient jewellry unfurls into cosmic ‘’dream-catcher’’ devices.

“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”- Coco Chanel

Artistic representation of fashion has existed since the dawn of civilization. From the statues of Mesopotamia, the walls of Egyptian pyramids, the master paintings of the Renaissance, the cover of Vogue’s first issue in 1892, and through today, artists have continued to carefully document fashion of the period. Gallery Nucleus is therefore proud to present our first fashion illustration exhibition.

We are privileged to have an international roster featuring established as well as emerging contemporary fashion illustrators. Exhibiting artists working in a variety of mediums from paint, watercolor, ink, textiles and digital media. These artists have worked with designers such as Dior, Jean-Paul Gualtier, and Marc Jacobs just to name a few. They have graced the pages of publications including, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Nylon and many more. We are pleased to showcase the ever expanding world of fashion illustration that represents the latest trends of our time and captivates the greatest styles that will last forever.

Coming this month is a special edition book about fashion “enfant extraordinaire” the Belgian born fashion designer Olivier Theyskens. Published by Assouline, this book is a wonderful photography essay by Julien Claessens, accompanied with a text by Sally Singer, the fashion news and features director for the US edition of Vogue.

“When he was twenty, Olivier Theyskens dropped out of design school to create his first collection. Within the next year, Women’s Wear Daily headlined his “Star Quality,” Harper’s Bazaar christened him an “Instant Icon,” and The New York Times singled out his work in coverage of the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute, where it was already enshrined. That Winter, Madonna wore Theyskens to the Oscars.

In the decade since, he has lent his power to two international brands, “restoring the fortunes,” as Vogue put it, of the house of Rochas, and then moving on to Nina Ricci as artistic director. His work has appeared on the cover of French, British, and American Vogue worn by Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, among other stars. Even the most casually fashion conscious consumers know his name, his striking face, and his dark, soft, and often-flattering aesthetic.

In this special edition book, photographer Julien Claessens looks back at his whirlwind career thus far. Claessens, who was given unprecedented backstage access to Theyskens’ fashion shows, beautifully captures the designer’s romantic and mysterious oeuvre.

Julien Claessens was born 1974 in Auvergne, France. At the age of 21, he left his hometown, abandoning his art history studies, to enroll at the art academy Ecole Nationale Superieur des Arts Visuels de la Cambre in Brussels He graduated with a degree in Photography in 2000.

Julien’s passion for people led him to the world of fashion. His groundbreaking, original work opened doors to famed Parisian houses Nina Ricci and Chanel Parfums Beauté. Despite his increasingly high-profile assignments, portrait art remains his true love. ”

A global initiative set up by Vogue editors across the world, the Fashion’s Night Out sees brands coming together for a night of fashion shows, workshops, champagne and late-night shopping.

“As part of a bold global initiative, the international editions of VOGUE are partnering with designers, department stores, high-street chains and boutiques to create Fashion’s Night Out, an evening extravaganza to be held around the world on Thursday, September 10, 2009, from 6pm until midnight. Here, in London’s West End, we aim to lift shopping spirits and to emphasise the pleasure and joy of fashion. London is home to some of the world’s most celebrated designers and is a number one shopping destination internationally – Fashion’s Night Out will reinforce this.

The VOGUE team will be working with retailers to create a night of original in-store activities, including personal appearances, makeovers and workshops, during extended shopping hours.

VOGUE has designed a limited-edition T-shirt for sale on the night, with 100 per cent of money raised going to Crisis, the UK charity for the homeless.”

Lee Miller was without doubt an extraordinary woman. Her beauty, first was surprising, since an early age to his 70 years: a pure beauty and sculptural. The men fell under her charm, Man Ray, Picasso, Robert Roland Penrose and many others.By her mid-thirties, already flooding the covers of British Vogue, Lee Miller chose to be at the other end of the camera in order to document the end of World War II. (She was one of only five female war correspondents.) Her photographs of London’s rubble & decay are amongst the finest war records. In Germany, at times her eye was cool – perhaps for self-protection – as when she photographed SS soldiers and their children, all dead by suicide. Although, when she encountered Hitler’s bathtub, she jumped in and playfully took a self-portrait. Her sweeping landscapes of the Middle East are like a lesson in geometry; and finally, the abstract female torsos she photographed can still moisten a few pants. Her knack for finding beauty in the most wretched places had quickly earned her “one of the seven most distinguished photographers.” [Vanity Fair]Lee Miller produced some of the most powerful photographs seen this century, from portraits of her friends such as Pablo Picasso, to her work as a correspondent with the US army in World War II. Beginning her own studio in Paris with artist Man Ray, she went on to work with Vogue, and in France, Egypt, and New York, being best remembered for her witty Surrealist images.
